1st International Nature Art Festival in Gaya, Gaya Go In Dol ‘99
Theme: Human-Nature, Ara Park, Haman District, Korea.
The first thing that struck me upon arriving in Korea is the thousands of red neon crosses, which litter the urban landscape. Korean history dates back 5,000 years, but Christianity has only been active here for 200 years. The symposium was held at an ancient burial ground, which encompasses twenty enormous earthen mounds dating back centuries. The local farmers are encroaching upon the hillsides to this area. Recently many trees had been cut and piled up to be burnt in preparation for terracing. By cutting and splicing a number of these broken trees together I created a ‘new tree’ onto one trunk. This ‘new tree’ was sited between two burial mounds and painted bright red to match the crosses on the horizon. The title Human/Nature was written on stones using traditional Korean characters and placed at the foot of the sculpture. Each evening at dusk there is a moment when the neon crosses and the tree have the same luminescence.
